Dubai's Salik RFID Toll system

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that consists of an integrated chip and an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal. RFID is usually Found as a TAG. there are two types of RFID systems one (active RFID tag) which functions with a battery and can transmit signals autonomously, the second (Passive RFID tag) needs no battery and can transmit signal but needs a device to provoke that. The RFID tag that I took apart is used in Toll systems in the City of Dubai- a city in the United Arab Emirates, it is of the second type the Passive RFID. Bellow are pictures of the RFID tag with a description under each.

1.The Front of the RFID tag

2. Tag placed on the inside of the windshield of your car

3.I removed the tag this is the back side

4. I took 2 layers off (the one in Pic3 and the layer under that) and reached this layer where you can see the RFID chip (black) and the silver is the antenna.

As your car approaches the RFID scanner it gets detected and scanned, scanning in this case will deduct money from your account.

I find this technology very interesting and its future is very promising , Do search Youtube for RFID and you will see many sectors of the industry using this technology and its shocking how things get sooo much easier with the use of RFID.

Actually RFID is used in my university library (AUS)! U just drop the books and pass ur id under the bar code laser and the computer will know the books u r taking!

Anyways, many objections are rising against this technology! It can be used to spy on people easily!

@Genki Dama Thanks for your comment, That's another good use of RFID. there is always a downside to any technology, I have watched many videos and read many article concerned with the privacy crisis that RFID technology might cause. I still think we should look at the benefits of this technology for the time being. We just need to be careful and knowledgeable enough to be able to create a balance between privacy and advancement of technology.

Thanks again for your comment

@Manina Thanks for your comment, If your car passes through a Salik scanner without a tag other cameras record your car number and you receive an SMS asking you to buy a tag within 10 days, if you do buy a tag (tags are linked to car numbers) the amount will be deducted from your new tag without any extra fines . In the case you cross the 10 days limit you will be fined 100 UAE Dirhams as this becomes a violation.

So with a tag from Abu Dhabi to Dubai (any place after Ibn batoota mall) and back to Abu Dhabi with a tag you'll be charged 8 Dirhams and without you'll pay 200. assuming you don't drive deep into Dubai :)

Hope that answers your question. Don't hesitate to post back if you have another questions.

I got a question, because I am doing a project bout RFID in Montreal and I got inspired from Salik, so my question is ok they got cameras that would get you if you dont have a Salik tag, but the thing is how do they notice in the 1st place that you passed through the gate if you dont have Salik? What awakes the camera to catch u?

Does the camera check almost every car or there is a metal identification sensor? Do you get me ?

Thanks

@Mohamad Thanks for your comment and for reading the article.

There are different technologies that monitor cars entering the gate. They use a technology called (ANPR) or Automatic number plate recognition to know the car entered. ANPR systems commonly use infrared lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any time of the day the camera detects the Number plate by Recognizing it directly and also stores picture of the plate, Some systems are set to store a picture of the driver too.

For example assuming 10 cars are entering the tolling system ANPR Cameras detect the 10 cars number plates then the RFID scanners send signals to stimulate the RFID Tag on each car to reply with its ID so that a certain amount of Money is deducted. If 1 of the 10 cars didn't report back then it's issued a violation ticket as it has been identified by the ANPR Cameras.

So yes the ANPR system checks every car at entry

There are concerns of accuracy but the system has become very accurate as technologies improve making the error rate not significant.

I have researched this topic out of deep curiosity and I agree there are some doubts of accuracy but as we learn more about it we tend to trust it more and more.

I hope this answers your question and please do not hesitate to reply back if you need anything else.

Thanks again for reading this article.

These things work pretty good. I'm always amazed at the speed of the drivers approaching the barriers with one of these tags. In fact, they hardly slow down at all. I'd be worried that the tag might fail and.......bang!

We are working on a project and would like to use the Salik tag to identify cars entering a parking.
Can you tell me wich RFID chip and reader are used by the SALIK system, any information is welcome.

@Anonymous Thanks for your comment, I can refer you to the company that developed SALIK its called transcore http://www.transcore.com I hope that helps.

@repossed cars Thanks for your comment, True, I was sceptical about the system at the start and was waiting to see them reporting errors in it but seems its very accurate.

Are these chips made in the US or are they manufactured in China or similar? Interesting to know if we will have any economic benefit from the rise in production from these tags?

Since Dubai Salik RFID Tag is posted inside of the my car and I will put a tint (about 80%) outside of my windshield and been able to cover entirely the tag, is this RFID Tag will still going to work? Thanks.

@Liam There is always Economical benefits there are Huge export contracts between the Arab World and China or the US.

Thanks for your comment

Ralphtips said...

@Liam the developer of those RFID tags used in Dubai is called Transcore A USA company :)

@Anonymous From what I have seen drivers put the tags under the Tinting. but to make sure am gonna check with the company and get back to you soon

thanks for your comment

They are actually using this in the Philippines. In their country its called an e-pass This is a great way to decrease the lines in tollways and ease the heavy traffic.

I think the RFID is a great addition to Dubai's tollways because there would be less traffic and a better way to improve the flow of traffic at tollways.
