These things work pretty good. I'm always amazed at the speed of the drivers approaching the barriers with one of these tags. In fact, they hardly slow down at all. I'd be worried that the tag might fail and.......bang!

There are different technologies that monitor cars entering the gate. They use a technology called (ANPR) or Automatic number plate recognition to know the car entered. ANPR systems commonly use infrared lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any time of the day the camera detects the Number plate by Recognizing it directly and also stores picture of the plate, Some systems are set to store a picture of the driver too.

For example assuming 10 cars are entering the tolling system ANPR Cameras detect the 10 cars number plates then the RFID scanners send signals to stimulate the RFID Tag on each car to reply with its ID so that a certain amount of Money is deducted. If 1 of the 10 cars didn't report back then it's issued a violation ticket as it has been identified by the ANPR Cameras.

So yes the ANPR system checks every car at entry

There are concerns of accuracy but the system has become very accurate as technologies improve making the error rate not significant.

I have researched this topic out of deep curiosity and I agree there are some doubts of accuracy but as we learn more about it we tend to trust it more and more.

I got a question, because I am doing a project bout RFID in Montreal and I got inspired from Salik, so my question is ok they got cameras that would get you if you dont have a Salik tag, but the thing is how do they notice in the 1st place that you passed through the gate if you dont have Salik? What awakes the camera to catch u?

Does the camera check almost every car or there is a metal identification sensor? Do you get me ?

@Manina Thanks for your comment, If your car passes through a Salik scanner without a tag other cameras record your car number and you receive an SMS asking you to buy a tag within 10 days, if you do buy a tag (tags are linked to car numbers) the amount will be deducted from your new tag without any extra fines . In the case you cross the 10 days limit you will be fined 100 UAE Dirhams as this becomes a violation.

So with a tag from Abu Dhabi to Dubai (any place after Ibn batoota mall) and back to Abu Dhabi with a tag you'll be charged 8 Dirhams and without you'll pay 200. assuming you don't drive deep into Dubai :)

@Genki Dama Thanks for your comment, That's another good use of RFID. there is always a downside to any technology, I have watched many videos and read many article concerned with the privacy crisis that RFID technology might cause. I still think we should look at the benefits of this technology for the time being. We just need to be careful and knowledgeable enough to be able to create a balance between privacy and advancement of technology.

Actually RFID is used in my university library (AUS)! U just drop the books and pass ur id under the bar code laser and the computer will know the books u r taking!

Anyways, many objections are rising against this technology! It can be used to spy on people easily!
